I need some examples or links to maps that are historical by nature, but have a modern feel. So rather than monochromatic, have color, show terrain, and structures. I'm designing a fictional agrarian map with a town by using real data. Please help, Thanks!

I'm not entirely sure what you are after. These are some historic looking maps made with ArcGIS:

The symbols are available as bmp and emfs so you don't necessarily have to use them in ArcGIS:
http://mappingcenter...sources.gateway Under Historical.

I believe some of the creators/authors of these cool maps are participants on this forum.

Thanks for sharing those maps. Another thing I'm struggling with is that I'm covering a very small area, so I want the layout to be somewhat pictoral, but still use the GIS data, shaded relief, etc.

Thanks for the reply, David. I am actually looking for ideas with a bit smaller scale. For an example, I'll show you this map: http://bit.ly/aDp90D

I don't want my map to be quite as illustrated, I want it to be less artsy and more cut and dry. I want it to look like real data, but that type of perspective as if you were looking over a town. With the real data I plan to show hills, streams and mountains that are already there while adding in landmarks. The area of land I will be mapping is a small town with a few farms around it.

I think you can find examples within the David Rumsey collection :

You might look into doing this with sketchup. You should be able to import your terrain to provide a base, and then rotate it to provide you with any angle you want.

Or Natural Scene Designer is inexpensive but powerful.

I think that this type of representation looks like "Bird's Eye" or panoramic maps.
