I have added a Links area to CartoTalk. This will make it easier to list member companies and GIS data links.
You can get to it from the main nav bar under the banner.
The Links are moderated, so after you post one of the moderators or myself will have to approve the listing.
We will work to move the existing GIS data links over from the exisiting topic.
Hans compiled a list of cartography companies, but now there is the opportunity to add comments and an image, so we will ask you to resubmit you company information yourself through the Links page.
New Links Area

great, cool and thanks again for all the work!
This is almost becoming a wiki -- I am actually a big wiki-fan, and I try to organize my notes on GIS and cartography in a wiki.

I guess to some degree that's what I had in mind for the "Advice and Tutorials" section. But an actual cartography Wiki is not a bad idea for the future.

There was brief discussion about the value of such thing for teaching vs. actual methods books, (of which very few new ones have been published) at NACIS. I think it is a great idea.

Just a thought:
How about adding some of the other useful and/or interesting sites people have posted to the links? Thinking of things like links to design and type sites, tutorial sites, etc. Or do you want to keep the links on topic?

I thought about that as well, but I want this to be a list of resources, so maybe I should change the name. It's just semantics but may be worthwhile.

I'd like to give a thanks to Gillian (EcoGraphic) for "volunteering" to be our Links Queen. She spent several hours yesterday inputting links and making suggestions for categories.

The links page is a really nice addition to this site. Thanks Nick, Gillian, et al, for putting it together.
I also like DaveB's suggestion of adding other resources (design, type sites, etc) as well.

We definately need more links in the Europe GIS data section, and I hope everyone will continue to add links as they find them. This is definately just a start..............

Well, due to a number of convergent issues with the database I lost all the hard work Gillian put into the Resources section.
All that information will have to be recreated, including your company listings if you entered them.
My sincerest apologies to Gillian, and I understand if she doesn't have the heart to redo the effort. Rest assured I have taken measures to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Resubmitting my entries...
Which raises another question: is the Cartotalk content backed up every now and then?

It's backed up every day, both at the hosting company and to my server here at home. The problem was that when I added the link tables I forgot to recreate my local backup script to include those tables. While I keep 5 days worth of backups, the hosting company only keeps 1 day and their backup had already been written over with the links data missing.
Of course I have now added the links tables to my local backup script.
