Does any body here know how to automatically derive a legend from a map style sheet that reflects only the visible polygons on the mapped layer?

Here's what I'm doing: I have a vegetation layer that spans my entire map, but I'm only showing it in sections related to specific watersheds within the map. What I do is use the watershed boundary to create a clipping mask over the veg layer so for each map we only see the veg data within that specific watershed. What I need is a way to automatically generate the legend just as MAPub does but only showing entries for the visible data.

Is there a workflow that or any shortcuts that may help me manage the legends without having to manually identify which of the 40 veg colors are present on each clipped map?
