I'm trying to learn about old hiking maps of the Lake District UK but am getting bogged down in series, revisions, editions etc.
Basically I want to know which was the first map the OS Published of the Lake District (Cumberland and Westmorland) that would be useful for hikers. So presumably the one inch series. I've no idea when they introduced contours.
I've been to the library to look at OS history books but while they seem chock full of trivia, none of them tell me what I'm after.
So, if there's any OS buffs here, can you inform me about the Lake District first 'hiking' maps please? I'd really love to know.
Thanks a million, MR
