None of the labels in my map will show up on either the data or the layout view. I've done the following to try to repair this:
-resized the reference scale both up and down, and then cleared the reference scale
-turned all the labels off
-checked to make sure the default buttons in Data Frame>Labels are all checked
-reset all label feature weights to "none"
-closed and reopened ArcInfo, and restarted the computer. Does anyone have further suggestions? (I have a crew coming out that needs maps, which I need to, well, label.)

Thank you,

Carri

Hard to "debug" without the actual map. The only thing I can think of right now is maybe you have some graphics in the data frame that are causing the labels to not be placed. You said you "reset all label feature weights to "none"" - but just to be sure -
Open the Labeling toolbar and click the Label Weight Ranking tool
In the Label Weight Ranking dialog is there a category called "Default", usually at the top? (that is the default annotation group where graphics in the data frame are created by default)
Try changing the Feature Weight for that to None

If that doesn't help you might also try contacting ESRI Technical Support so one of the support analysts can work with you directly.

I spent about an hour talking to a very helpful lady at ESRI support, and after going through the known workarounds she reccomended adding each layer to an empty .mxd and seeing which one broke the labels. Sure enough, one of the more recent layers was the culprit; it was an UTM NAD83 layer with some 0,0 lat/long data, which resulted in a "spatial reference extent inconsistent with associated spatial reference info" message and the dissapearance of all labels from the project. Once the 0,0 data was removed from the layer, ArcMap returned to normal functioning.

Thanks for the help,
