Downloaded some GIS data from this USGS depot:

When I decompress the file using Winzip I get a single file with no extension. I presume these files are not in SDTS format as there would be numerous files with the .adf extensions. So I can only guess it is a .DLG file. The dlg to MIF converter I have is choking on the file since it is not formatted correctly. Anyone have any suggestions on how to translate this into a format that Manifold will read? I think that this might be something that FME can do (Hans?)

There is zero metadata with the file which will only increase the pleasure once I try to figure out the projection this should be in.

An email to the people hosting the link at the Alaska State Geo-Spatial Data Clearinghouse directed me to the USGS....but I'm not that desperate yet.

As I was typing my question, it occured to me that I did not check if Manifold could import the .DLG as is....and YES it can.

I downloaded one and tried opening it in AICS2. It just picked-up the header and gave me the following...

I use Global Mapper of all of my DLG conversions. Works awesome, especially with the SDTS. You can import, say, all the hypso files for an an area, reproject on the fly if need be, then export the areas, lines, and points to seperate shapefiles with the reprojected CS, and the shapefiles will have all the codes and labels ready to go.
