I often work with tabular data in Microsoft Access, where I massage it and get it in right order for joining in e.g. ArcMap.

I have been annoyed with the lack of support in ArcGIS for the accdb format, and also that one can't join directly to queries (one has to set up a table).

Now, I figured out how to do this. Maybe this is common knowledge, and I am sure it is in the documentation - but anyways:

  • Set up your Microsoft Access 2007 database as an ODBC data source
  • Add this as an OLE DB database in ArcCatalog
  • Now you should be able to see all tables + queries, and you can drag them over to your ArcMap window
  • voilá!
