Just got this through the Carto-SOC list. Jacques Bertin passed away on May 3rd. His work on information visualisation, mainly through his work "Semiologie Graphique" is a very important foundation on what we do today.

I remember reading and trying to understand his books while in graduate school many years ago. Bertin helped develop the idea of a deliberate, rational approach to technical graphics. Though I understood the details poorly, I was impressed with his premise that we can analyze information needs to help us design solutions.
