A Belgian archeologist claims to have found the oldest map in the world. On a 2500 year old piece of pottery the outline of southern Italy, as well as some place names, has been depicted. It's apparently the first example of an ancient Greek map.

Sounds like a weak claim. AFAIK maps like Catal Hüyuk are way older than 5000 years.A Belgian archeologist claims to have found the oldest map in the world. I know, I have my doubts about this as well. Couldn't find a 2nd source for the news either. I'm pretty sure maps were used in Egypt and Sumeria about 4500 years ago.
Did any of those older maps ever survive? I thought there were some clay tablet maps that were found.

Catal hüyuk was a cave drawing, at least some kind of mural, afaik. And the nubian gold mine map is still around, I think.
