Hi,

Have you ever seen a map and immediately felt sick? My workmate did the preliminaries on this map and requested me to continue as he is pressed for time. Unfortunately, as soon as I opened the map he was doing, I got sick - nauseous with a throbbing headache. I am not kidding you... I reckon it's the color combination used?

Any criticism/suggestions will be a great help.

nobody's suggested anything yet,
i would find out how many of those layers could be dropped, grouped together, renamed, or restructured. that would ease some pain. maybe

Well, getting rid of that black background is the first thing you could do.
The second, already suggested is to group some of the objects in logical classes and then try to play with symbology for each group - remember you have not only fills at a hand - you can also use outlines, patterns, icons, and so on.
The third step (or maybe it should be the first...) - look at a map similar in content to yours (a city plan would do) and see what you like about it. Then try to look at yours from a different angle.

The absolute first step in trying to clean this up is to step back from the map and think about - what do we/I want to communicate with this map - what are the messages.

Thanks everyone for all your help... Luckily, I didnt have to do anything about this at the moment... I got so sick I had to go on holiday and this project has been postponed...

Will incorporate all the suggestions when we restart the whole process

Yipes, map-nausea... I don't like to be overly critical, but that map is a great candidate for cartastrophe.com.

My only suggestion is to determine the underlying project goal and start from scratch. You'll spend as much time fixing that as you will creating your own.

Seriously, I´d think it first would be very important to understand what the different classes of "highway" allude to. I´m seeing "pedestrain highways" which confuse me a great deal. Are these like skywalks? They surely aren´t no highways in the obvious meaning, no?

The pinkish highways really stand out, mabye this is not so bad if we knew what the message of the map is supposed to be.
