I wasn't really aware of this - maybe I should have - but a client just asked me to update a set of maps over the Middle East. The Arab countries had requested a change from Persian Gulf to Arabian Gulf. Now that would break with common usage in English, and upset the Iranians, so in the end we now changed it to The Gulf (which will still upset people).

I always liked the word Persian. and they already got the name Arabian Peninsula.
I also think we would understand more who we are dealing with if the Shah's father(?) handn't change the noble name of Persia into that stupid and insipid name of IRAN
