The majority of geographers and GIS users has knowledge about the Gridded Population of the World (GPW3).

They have now updated their website with the Population Estimate Service based on GPW3 for 2005.

This includes a interactive map of population density, and a population estimator where users can draw polygons, and estimate the population within the polygon.

The estimator service is based on google earth, but can be accomodated to SOAP and REST as well.
