got my first digest today, figured I otta introduce myself. I 'm a Cartographer/Software engineer from the state of Oregon. Got started in the biz by by working for the USGS National Mapping Division as a Temporary Field Assistant. Loved the job so's I changed careers (useta teach tennis), then the
&%*$%# gubment layed me off (cost cutting). Now I write software so's I can stay in the mapping biz.

Welcome aboard! I had a not-dissimilar experience with the USGS early in my career. I started out as a contractor with the Atlantic Marine Geology branch in Woods Hole, MA. I would have loved to stay (nice people, interesting work, lived a mile from the beach, biked to work, etc.) but the USGS at that time consisted of people who had been there for decades or months. And there was not much chance of ever moving across that divide. Fortunately I found an opportunity to do cartography in a much more stable agency.
