Ok, I have had enough of the shotty choice of colors that illustrator automatically sets to every new layer that I create. C'mon; yellow, light green, magenta, light blue. How can one tell if an anchor point is selected?

I was wondering if anyone knows how to create a custom color palette for illy to select from. I obviously don't use the default colors that illy selects, I manually change them when I name the layer, but I am tired of doing this time and time again.

I've never bothered to set them manually, but I agree with you, especially regarding the yellow. It is almost impossible to see against a white background and it drives me up the wall!

I spent over ten years at CSAA re assigning those colors, and continue to this day in my private work. If there is a way to preset them I don't even want to know about at this point!

I find that I break stuff up into more or less the same layers for most projects and that I usually only need to assign optimal selection colors for the few layers I work with a lot... for me that's the type layer first (this always gets orange) then the road layers (usually red or maybe dark blue depending on line color). After that I only change layers if I find I'm doing a lot of work in them and am having a hard time seeing the anchors... with the exception of yellow and light blue, which I change a soon as I see them (blech).

Save over these files with whatever settings you prefer (swatches, symbols, brushes etc)
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings\en_GB\New Document Profiles\

Sorry for those that this advice has coem too late for...

There are also files here which I think are used to create the new user profiles:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4\Support Files\Required\New Document Profiles\en_GB

Obviously that's for Windows but I'm sure the Mac will have a set of files somewhere.

Damn, I was all excited. It is just a minor inconvenience, but one that I have dealt with for a long time. Thought maybe some of the great minds, like yourself, would know an easy work-around.
