Thanks Kay (and Hans),
This method requires that the text is originally generated as a label- in other words, it needs to be an attribute of some data layer.
Has anybody come up with a way to take plain old text created in Illustrator and create something like annotation? I have tried by exporting to an interchange file and dwg (after making the text a text feature) with no luck.

^Yes, I want a GUI way to do this. I want to do something like click on a feature and then click on a label to have them associated.
