I know you have all been waiting patiently, so here it is finally. You can buy it now through Lulu. Just follow the links at the Cartography Design Annual website.

Here is a quick description for those of you that don't know what the Annual is.

Showcasing the Art of Map Making

The Cartography Design Annual is a collection of maps from some of the top cartographers in the world capturing the beauty of mapping. Compiled and edited by Nick Springer, the Cartography Design Annual collects a select group of maps published in the calendar year 2008. The maps cover a broad spectrum of cartographic styles: 3D birds-eye views, travel maps, historic-style maps, mountain maps, and many more. The Annual is published by Springer Cartographics LLC, with support from NACIS (the North American Cartographic Information Society). The book, in beautiful full-color with an overview and detail view of each map, is both a showcase for cartographers and a interesting collection for anyone who loves maps.

The first Cartography Design Annual was received with great praise and excitement from the cartographic community and so the series continues with this second edition. With a foreword by Tom Patterson of the U.S. National Park Service in the second edition, the release Cartography Design Annual series is becoming an anticipated event for cartographers.

The book contains 30 maps from cartographers in the United States, Canada, Sweden, Norway, and Poland. This is book #2 in what will be an annual series.

The editor, Nick Springer is also the founder of Cartotalk.com, the most popular online community for cartographers worldwide. “The first edition of the Cartography Design Annual was a bit of an experiment, but all of the great feedback I received form cartographers proved that there is a need for this kind of showcase.” said Mr. Springer. “I hope this year's edition will gain even broader exposure outside the world of cartographers.”

Mr. Springer is the Founder and President of Springer Cartographics LLC in Crosswicks, NJ and has worked for Microsoft Corporation as a Product Designer creating mapping applications and also designs software for GPS navigation systems. He studied Geography and Cartography at Syracuse University.

Had a very good feeling about this when first announced in April 2008

from June 04-2008
Thank you for all your efforts on this one.
For those that haven’t realized it yet. This is going to be big.
It’s global and it’s creative with a slice of altruism.
All in the profession will benefit in the long run.
Keep up the good work!

and June 19-2008
There’s no beating around the bush and certainly no pussyfooting with this guy Nick.
This will become mega.
Well done one and all.

Anyone know if there's going to be a 3rd design annual? I emailed Nick through his website but no reply.

Well thats too bad, but I certainly understand. I think it was a really good project, very accessible for entry level professionals like myself. And it had potential as a teaching aid for cart/GIS mapping classes. But I agree, the price was a bit high and probably kept more people from buying.

It's a tough market these days especially when we are on the cusp of the next great depression. If the market improves then maybe the third edition can be produced depending if the other two editions pick up in sales. However I would not push making a book every year, wait for until the demand is there.

"There is much beauty that we fail to see through our own eyes teeming with life forms that give us that perception of our reality.  Leaves on the trees blowing gently in the wind, or scarily, the waves pounding through high surf, or lightly on a warm summer’s day; that opportunity to sit or swim in the water on a white beach.   That comfort to shout, “The universal conscious do you hear me?  I am alive, guide me dear logos towards the path of rightnesses.”  Earned what has been kept, no longer to be absorbed into a life filled with cold damn winds and  that stubborn fog clouding  my vision with nothing but darkness."

At the NACIS annual meeting I thought they said something about NACIS taking over sponsorship of this. Was I misunderstanding?

NACIS is currently exploring the options of a similar, but separate, publication that will help promote our field of cartography as well as the broad talent base of our membership. Stay tuned for more information.

I know it's quite late but I have just seen the domain of the cartography annual is no longer active and presents some garbage instead so it kinda made me write this post...

I've been thinking - I don't know what kind of budget makes it possible to publish something like Cartography Design Annual, but maybe it is worth to try to do it together? Either by collecting some funds needed to run the project or by establishing some kind of network that could source and rank the maps and prepare the publication as an e-publication?

What do you think chaps? It is pitty the Annual died along the way :(

Bummer to hear that the CDA is no more, I've been intending to purchase #1 and #2 for a while now but never really had the spare cash...I just snapped up the last two off of Amazon.ca after reading this! Hopefully they will continue somehow.
