Does anyone know of a simple method or tool extension for line generalization for a shapefile? I have access to Arcview 9, but none of the tools in ArcEditor or Info/workstation.

A week or two ago I checked out the www.mapshaper.org site that was presented at the NACIS meeting at SLC. The functionality they presented did not seem to be available on the site, which is too bad b/c I was looking forward to playing with their tool.

I highly recommend the Edit Tools sold by Ianko if you are not going to have access to Arc Info or Editor ( I don't either). He produces two very powerful suites of tools that sell for very cheap considering what they do. It includes a few smoothing and generaliztion tools as well as alot of geoprocessing and conversion tools. For me these are indispensable.

I second the recommendation for Edit Tools.

I've been using Edit Tools since back in the ArcView 3.2 days, and I've never found anything that can beat it. I'm not sure on the limitations of the free version, but the toolset on the whole is well worth the money.
