While I agree that the mapping quality still leaves something to be desired, the API is very cool

Thanks. I could add some functionality, but even in its current state, this has some potential.

Yes, URL's will work if you do them in proper HTML, like:
<a href="http://www.whatever.com" target="_blank">this</a>
In fact, the comment will take about any HTML tag... It's being rendered as HTML anyway.
