Here is a quick figure generated from geographic data, but presented as an elevation (rather than plan) view. Highlighted in the figure are changes in soil properties along a Climatic/Biotic gradient (from the base to top of the western Sierra Nevada).

Statewide precipitation, life zone boundaries, and regional DEM were used in the production of this chart. GPS locations were used to place the soil pit points on the transect. GRASS GIS was used for all geographic processing, with reprojections/conversions done by the GDAL tools. Creation of initial vector paths was done with GNU Plot. Final synthesis was done with Illustrator.
