I have been a GIS & Mapping consultant since 2002. I am qualified with a BTech Degree in Cartography from the Cape Technikon, now called the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Cape Town, South Africa. Prior to 2002 (since 1990) I was employed by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, Stellenbosch, South Africa - as a surveyor (GPS & other surveying instruments) and GIS specialist. Here I utilised the full suite of ESRI products. Since 2002 I mainly use ESRI Arcview to conduct GIS and mapping projects.

I am interested in freelance GIS & mapping projects all over the world, but see myself most fit to assist and conduct agriculture and other natural resource based projects on the African continent. Many "settler" farmers are currently starting out farming projects in African countries, where little or no GIS and mapping services are available. I hope to assist them with mapping of the land they lease, and creating individual geographic based record keeping systems to assist in managing such projects. GIS mapping of "new" land can be of great benefit to individuals, assisting in applying the best possible practices in starting out a farming venture.

I have a website at www.glmapping.co.za providing a basic overview of what I do, including a blog in which I try to create a roadmap to DIY (do-it-yourself) mapping, mostly with the use of free internet mapping resources.

I have also assisted in various cartography projects of which the most important was a detailed road- and infrastructure map of the Kruger National Park in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, for a company called PrimeOrigins.

I wish to get involved in freelance GIS & mapping projects anywhere in the world, which can be conducted from my home base in the town of Paarl, located in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Nice blog!
As a student I learned a few new things I didn't know yet about GIS, thanks for that.
