Hi, I am new to Illustrator and I am trying to make a cirle with having each segment on the edge a different color. During this process I have an annoying document that shows out of nowhere when I click Paste to Front. How does a document I recently worked on ( In notepad) wind up in Illustrator, and how do I fix this? I would really appreciate a response for I have been posting to different forums for 6 days and never got a reply, this happens in different documents I use in Illustrator , not just one. This post seems more assuring so I really hope to hear from someone soon. Thank you very much. Naomi

Great looking forum!

And you think that there should be something else on the clipboard? You have copied some paths/layers/groups that you want to paste in somewhere else in Illy? To me it sounds like you still have the notepad stuff on the clipboard...

You can verify what you have on the clipboard by just pasting into Word or something. I remember Windows 3 had a tool where one could inspect the clipboard built in, but I don't think modern Windows has that.

For me, I am a big fan of using a clipboard manager, which I find increases my productivity enormously - I use ArsClip (freeware).

Paste to font will paste whatever the last item you copied is to the top level on the Illy document. If you haven't properly copied anything in Illy, that will be whatever was left on the clipboard from other programs. Try the "Copy" command again, then paste. For the circle, once you have positioned it where you want you will need to use the scissors tool at each vertex on the circle path to cut it into quarters (or halves, not sure what your doing). once the circle is cut into pieces you can color each segment as you like. If you want to still be able to move the circle as a single object select all of the new segments and use the "Group" command.

If what you are trying to do is simply move an object to the front, rather than create a duplicate of a copied object, then you need to select your object and use Object > Arrange > Bring to front. HTH

You don't even need to cut the circle, you can just put paths on top of it to make an x, and then use live paint.

Hey Guys , thank you for all the useful info, actually I can't do it either way due to a project that I am doing in my illustrator book that actually gives me directions, lol, I follow the directions percisely and yet it doesn't work for me, I am actually getting my printer and scanner hooked up tommorrow so I will copy it to show you. It is a very short project, maybe 7 steps, anyone who can do it through these directions can maybe then show me what I am missing. I did try the scissors and it worked and I also tried without the scissors and it also worked. So I will get in touch again tommorrow evening. You guys are awesome! and thank you for the quick reply!!!! Naomi
