Hi everyone, new member here.....

I am looking for some data for Africa, specifically the East of the continent. Does anyone know of a good website that might have this info, preferably in shapefile format? I need mainly roads, towns, hydrology etc.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome!

One site you might want to check is the FAO GeoNetwork: http://www.fao.org/g...rv/en/main.home

Hi again,

If there is anyway of getting some hydrology layers for Africa that would be great. I can find some out there but all of them don't seem to include Lake Malawi which I really need.

Any help appreciated,

Dave, SAIT student, Calgary.

Have you tried the VMAP0 hydrography layer? The road data is woefully inaccurate and the boundary is dated in places, but the lakes and rivers haven't changed much (except for some new reservoirs in some areas). Here are a couple of download links:
www.mapability.com/info/vmap0_index.html
gis-lab.info/qa/vmap0-eng.html

Global Mapper is ideal for browsing, selecting, and exporting the data.

The VMAPo is perfect - thanks!!! Exactly what I'm after.

It's only for a personal project so doesn't have to be amazingly accurate, but it all looks good to me.

Dave.

Ok, on further inspection the road layer has some needed roads missing:) Is there another website anyone knows of that would include not all roads but certainly main ones? On the VMapO layer there isn't a road from Kenya into Tanzania or from Lusaka to Vic Falls which I need. Otherwise it has alot of useful info.

Maybe OpenStreetmap... downloads (shapefiles) are here.
