Hi all,
Does anyone know a software for producing "flow maps" showing the movement of goods, money, comutters, etc.?
I know of Tobler's FlowMapper. This software does not generate Bezier curves but only straight lines, and hence does not try to arrange the lines in a way that minimizes the number of line crossings.
I wonder if there is a more advanced software.

Thanks for posting a link to this site through the FlowMapper link. What an interesting organization. I hadn't come across them before. I decided to subscribe to their newsletter.

Bernie,
Golden software's MapViewer (My very first digital maps were made with this software about 10yrs ago) has a flow mapping function but I have not tested it. It looks rather primitive.

Hi Bernie,
I don't have an easy answer for you - we create flow maps in Illustrator, and they are among the most time consuming to do. We may use other software to plot the routes or do proportional symbols, but final design becomes an illy puzzle.

Bernie,
You should download the demo version of 'MapViewer 6':
http://www.goldensof...mapviewer.shtml
Although you will not have the export and save properties you will have all the other tools. By the way the export options in the registered version are many and you could export your map to illustrator to make it look cartographically more aesthetic.
Here is a very basic (It had to be finished in two days) flow map I did while at school using MapViewer (I had no access to Illustrator at that time).
Hope this help.
