I'm labeling a graticule on my map, which focuses on Northern Canada, and I was wondering what the convention was for using "W" for the meridians (ex. 90ºW vs 90º). I've checked out maps of Canada online, and a lot of them do not use the W. Is there a set rule about this, or does it depend on the scale of the map?
There is no rule really, it's up to you and depends on your audience and the purpose of the map. I would recommend adding W and E if both of them occur on your map though.
