The heat from the burning tanker was so intense it melted and collapsed an overpass where 9-Mile Road crosses the Interstate.
At the time of the accident, thick black smoke billowed from the scene and flames shot up 150 to 200 feet, snarling traffic on both sides. Plumes of white smoke thick with the stench of burning wreckage wafted skyward long after the crash as the mangled trucks continued to smolder.
That section of I-75 carries an average of more than 160,000 vehicles a day, according to state traffic counts. Thankfully, the accident did not happen during rush hour and no one was seriously hurt.
