Looking for quick and dirty access to GIS data for India and surrounding areas. I need major roads, towns and DEM data. I've scanned the forum but didn't come up with too much. I do have the wold boarder set from Thematic Mapping and it looks good.

Hi David,

For cities and towns in India (or any country, for that matter), World-gazetteer.com is the best resource on the web. Along with geocoordinates, alternate names, and administrative divisions, an estimated 2009 population is also given. Here is the page for India -- click on "view more cities and places" to get a list of the 1,000 most populated places in the country.

You can also download a database of about 170,000 cities and towns around the world. Click on "info/help" for usage conditions.

You may also try at www.geonames.org - for me it's the best gazetterr. It's a merged source from couple agendas, and also has population data.
www.openstreetmap.org - should be quite usefull about road data. AND comercial vendor contributed major road network.

Hope it helps,
