That's cool. I never heard of such a means of river crossing (not many rivers to cross here).

This may be an easy one - name the island.

San Miguel Island, Channel Islands National Park, California. I once spent a pleasant day on that uninhabited island off the densely populated southern California coast.

That must have been fun. You are correct, of course, Tom. I had a professor at SDSU who sometimes did biogeography research on the Channel Islands (if I recall correctly). Your turn.

This island is ringed by a coral reef. Dense mangroves grow along the shore. There are no beaches.

This is Pohnpei (also known as Ponape) in the Caroline Islands, Micronesia.

For the Earth atlas I did the maps of Pacific Islands, so I've seen a lot of them on Google Earth :) Found this on my 2nd try...

Hans, I'm impressed. I thought for sure that naming this remote Pacific island would take at least a couple of images and hints. You are next.

Nobody is living there anymore, but you can still visit.

That would be St Kilda about 60km west of the Hebrides. Very interesting story on Wiki especially about the parliament and the mail boat.

Correct. I seem to have a strange fascination with faraway islands :)

This next one is a port city in a far away place. I'd like to visit here one day.

It can get very cold here and even so the natives once wandered almost naked.
