A Tibetan monk came here and said "Yep - this is the spot," and the natives don't seem to have a problem with it.

Reversing the trend of posting a smaller scale map, perhaps this (larger scale) image can provide some enlightenment.

The Garden of One Thousand Buddhas
Seems like a very interesting spot on an unlikely place! Thanks to your hints.

You got it!
This location is on the Flathead Indian Reservation of the Confederated Salish and Kootenia Tribes in Arlee, Montana. It's a ~25 minute drive north of Missoula. I took a quick trip home for Thanksgiving and wanted to see some fresh snow in the Missions mountains.
It was rewarding not only to see the Garden of 1,000 Buddhas, but also to travel on the recently rebuilt Hwy 93 that passes through the reservation and boasts more animal crossings per mile than any road of which I know.
It's well worth a visit and if you walk around the Dharma Wheel a few times with a still mind, I guarantee your thoughts will be clearer.

Right on! You got it.
This very desolated oasis was once a stop over for caravans traveling the Silk route.

In keeping with this theme - where is this buddhist temple?

Interestingly, if you draw a line Eastward following the three Buddhist temples Borobudur, Pawon and Mendut you arrive at a restless volcano - turning a little less than 90ยบ Southward and traveling about the same distance, you will find this temple (along with its Hindu relative).
The off-nadir image gives these temples an interesting dimensional perspective.
