I've had a career based around GIS for the past 2 - 3 years since graduating. I currently work for the fire service in Merseyside, UK within the knowledge and information management department using both MapInfo and other emergency services specific GIS tools. I would say I'm balanced 50:50 between spatial and non-spatial data tasks in my job role with a lot of the tasks being repetitions of the same thing. I really enjoy the cartographic side of the work although by the nature of the work the creative element of this limited by the amount of time I can spend per task.

I've recently started looking at GIS and cartography forums to broaden my knowledge of the areas and also help provoke some ideas as to how to add more value to my work and also make my work have better visual impact as at the end of the day it's both what you can do with the data AND how this is displayed to the consumer. You could have a great analysis that clearly identifies an issue but for this to have the desired impact on the end user i.e. get them to make the appropriate changes you need this analysis to have an impact.

Will hopefully get to speak to you all more in the forums!
It's only an inch from me to you, depending on what map you use.
