Hi Hans. It's obvious that the kids need to see large scale maps and aerial photographs of places that matter to them, such as their school and homes. Beyond that, you never know what may ignite their interest. Mine happened when I spent hours studying the above image in A.K. Lobeck's book Block Diagrams (page 171) trying to understand how a map could be constructed from perspective views.

For GIS Day last year, a colleague borrowed several GPS devices and set up a scavenger hunt on the school's campus. There were several lists of coordinates so that the groups were spread out. He also did a presentation and had a list of trivia questions as an opener where the first correct answer got something.
