I needed to create a little map graphic for someone's article, and I didn't want to do it in ArcMap, because it gets a bit tedious. Unfortunately we don't have a copy of Illustrator or the like, so I decided to use Inkscape. Supposedly you can import *.ai files, but this always crashed. Exporting to an SVG file seemed to lose the labels (which i suppose could have been done in Inkscape, since I changed the labels anyway). Exporting to a PDF and then opening directly in Inkscape actually worked best, and I didn't lose anything. I didn't really need to do anything too complex, so it worked great for me. Just thought I'd share the tip.
