There is an interesting article in the New Scientist about the universe possibly being a hologram:

Our everyday experience might itself be a holographic projection of physical processes that take place on a distant, 2D surface.

So the world may indeed be flat after all... Oh the irony of it...

Seriously, in the seventies I got very fascinated with that cosmic physics stuff. 30 years later, physicists have not come up with anything new let alone relevant. They talked about black holes, string theory and multi-dimensions back then and were speculating the exact same things. The emperor has no clothes.
