Interesting animated map of Wal-Mart's popping up in the U.S.

Aaack! Quite a plague indeed!

You're safe for now Michael - I didn't see any popping-up in Toronto!

Unfortunately, they are just showing the US stores - the plague has spread throughout Canada too!

One major critique of the map is that it does not reflect closed Wal-marts... the assumption of the map is, if it opened once, it's still there.

Interesting times for those of us who map the suburbs... coming soon, a raft of abandoned big-box establishments:

Within a few months, more than one-eighth of the country's retail space will be sitting vacant, according to some estimates. That's about 1.4 billion square feet, or 50 square miles, of empty store space, ringed by roughly 150 square miles of useless parking lot.

Yes unfortunately it is really a big competition for Canadian retailers like Zellers. But they are pretty much everywhere these days.

THEY LIVE!!!!!!

OK sorry... bad line.
Seriously, this goes to show you what happens when you become too successful.

I too would love to see a map of all the empty big box stores too. Be kinda neat to see them become parks or other outdoor use places.. but wishful thinking I guess.
Architects design things,
Engineers build things,
and Cartographers tell them where to go.
