I was wondering what those tools are called that are used to slide around on the map while viewing?

Like you see in the movies, like on an old treasure map or in a setting like Indiana Jones.

Pan? Zoom?

Sorry if that's not what you are looking for.

Cheers,

Parallels? Dividers? Compass?

You can tell I'm old school because of the types of tools I identify with!

Ouija board? Runes? Bones? Tarot cards? Glass eye?

Maybe its just a compass or random object they slide around to mark their place and keep the map from blowing away. I was thinking it was similar to the planchette used on an ouija board. I'm really intrigued by old maps/etc. and it was driving me nuts not knowing what it was! Now for some GIS...

Thanks for the responses

I believe the name of the object you're thinking of is called a lupe (pronounced like "loop").
