My Mac text editor of choice is TexEdit, though when I have serious cleanup to do I use TextWrangler.

  • GDAL / OGR. Does some of what FME does, but for free (in fact, some of FME's functionality uses GDAL).
  • MapServer. Officially does webmapping. I use Python-mapscript for automating repetitive mapping projects. The output quality isn't necessarily as nice as Illy, or even ArcGIS, but the time savings make it worthwhile.
  • Irfanview. Perhaps the greatest free image viewer ever. It's fast and simple to use. Using the mouse wheel, it scrolls through all images in a directory, which is a fantastic feature. For basic edits to an image like cropping or rotating, I can be done using Irfanview in less time than it takes Photoshop to open. It's not a replacement to Photoshop, but an addition to.
