Another sample of my work:

sort-of-dynamic map

This was done a few months ago, using MAPublisher and Illustrator CS for the cartography. I used the segments option in Illustrator to produce the image map and to link symbols to url's. The rest is some manual HTML coding (I'm a hardcore HTML geek... still write most of my pages by hand).

I like it. The design captures the subject matter well.

You could maybe add some place and date labels, either on the map or as HTML rollovers.

I was thinking of redoing it in Flash or on a Internet Map Server once I have the facilities for that. I think I'm pushing the boundaries of HTML with this one already.

Actually, HTML could handle this fine if you approached it a little differently. It looks like you used a very complex table structure to create all the locations. You could have either used a single image and an image map, or used Absolute CSS Positioning to place each symbol.

Of course Flash might be just as good.

True, an image map would be an option. I'm not too sure on CSS positioning, I've never really used that.

Adobe Illustrator offers the option of creating segments in your drawing, which can be linked to url's in the Save For Web menu. It will then automagically generate the tables for it. I believe that map has about 40-50 table cells...

Cool map, Hans. I love the background image (flag).The only thing I would do is add text to the city names. Like Nick said, I think you could do the same thing much easier by creating a simple image map. If you have photoshop, fireworks, or dreamweaver (or any other program that allows you to create slices), you could slice up the base map in about five minutes and save yourself the trouble of working with a scary table. Even better, I think you should you develop this map in Flash. You have alll the elements for a perfect Flash movie... Erin

Thanks for your comments.

All the elements for a perfect Flash movie, but no knowledge of Flash at all, I'm sure that'll make a it a bit harder (also currently not the $ to pay for Flash).

The slicing option in Illustrator is pretty interesting, but as I said, I think I'm pushing the limitations.

Once I have the time to dive more into Flash, I'll definately pick up this map again.
