Anyone know of any nifty tool (preferably standalone freeware) that can convert between Garmin GPX and shapefiles?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I usually do it in two steps:
1) conversion to polish format with not registered version of GPSMap Edit (http://www.geopainting.com/en/)
(Registered version allow convert to shp directly)
2) Polish format to shp with software Pthxr2shp converter (http://www.msh-tools.com/Ptxt2shp.html)
regards,
Gregory

I'll have to check out GPXshape. I use GPS Babel to go from .gpx to .kml, and then use Manifold to convert the .kml to .shp. As far as I know, Babel does not take .gpx directly to .shp (?)

This is an older thread, but I thought that I would chime in and say that the gpx2shp works great.
Run it from the cmd window
Start --> Run --> type "cmd" hit Enter
nav to the directory that has the gpx2shp.exe file, make sure your gpx file is in the same directory
>gpx2shp [nameOfYourFileHere] <enter>
If you run into any issues, check the readme.

Thanks, good info. I had also been using GPS Babel + Manifold, but will check out gpx2shp. I'm hoping someday Manifold will do a direct import.

You might also care to have a look at DNR Garmin. This will convert to and from SHP, GPX, CSV, DBF and KML. I use it a lot, it's notionally a GPS add-on for ArcGIS but it will run stand-alone, you don't need a GPS receiver or ArcGIS to use it. Free from:
DNR Garmin

Lol, I just realized that I replied months ago on this thread when it first came out, then replied again yesterday and said the exact same thing!
Shows you what a procrastinator I am!
Yes, I had DNR Garmin installed, but don't care for it much. It's been awhile, but I think I had conversion problems with it. Plus, installing .dlls into ArcMap is always asking for trouble. I prefer something command-line, like GPS Babel. I suppose I could still try the stand-alone of DNR Garmin...

Ah, in that case have a look at ogr2ogr from FWTools; like DNR Garmin it uses Proj.4 and (for me at least) it does very accurate conversions.

I have a problem converting files in polish format to arc shp files in Ptext2shp converter. Whenever I open the .mp file in Ptext2shp converter, a dialogue box saying "no data found" appears. Can you help me out? Thanks.
