This animation is fascinating in a number of ways. Unfortunately I haven't been able to determine who the actual creator is. Would love to learn where they got the data and what application they used to simulate it.

That's a really cool animation!
I tracked it back to the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). It seems they have even completed a Mashup with Live Air Traffic from Zurich. Included is a Paper describing the process.
