From Real World Illustrator

Cartographers complained bitterly since Illustrator CS was released that text on a path looked horrible. Kerning and typesetting along a path got a significant downgrade when the new text engine appeared. Now, in CS4, text on a path looks great. So much so that at a recent “sneak” at a cartographer’s show, this feature got a standing ovation.

I"m actually pretty excited about the changes to the appearance panel (clickable eyeballs to turn on/off effects!) and the new additive nature of graphic styles. I do wish however that Illustrator had gotten a couple of things that Photoshop is getting, namely spring loaded shortcut keys and the ability to rotate the entire canvas to any angle. Oh well, next time I guess.

There's a video online showing some of the highlights of Illustrator CS4:

typing CS4 looks almost like typing C64 - like the old commodore 64 (my third computer). Maybe it is time for Adobe to release a version for that computer, so that I don't have to use GEOS GeoPaint or KoalaPainter to make maps anymore...

That brings back fond memories (GEOS). I've never made a map in GeoPaint, but I think it would be a fun challenge.
(A fun challenge that would probably drive me crazy.)
