Another Illustrator gripe:

It seems to happen fairly often that when I'm working on a big map, Illustrator suddenly crashes when I move a piece of type. Just lost another 10 minutes of work just now.

Any idea what causes it and what can be done about it?

Was this document saved with PDF Compatiblity checked on or off? If it isn't PDF compatible try resaving and see if the problem persists. This is a longshot suggestion, but I've experienced similar crashes when using the Hand tool on non PDF compatible documents. There could be no correlation at all, but it's worth trying. Erin

Illustrator, do something, crash.

I thought that was part of the definition of the program.

It's always been a finicky program for me and those that work around me. And in all honesty it usually is well behaved, but there do seem to be those periods of time where it goes into mind reader mode and just as you think "I oughta save this" it implodes. I'd say on average I'll hear someone in the department curse at it at least once a day.

Having said all that, I have no solutions other than don't move that type.

Reminds me of the old "Windows has detected mouse movement and will now restart"

Hi Hans

If you are moving a type and it crashes or freezes or does not allow you to save the document, then it is Font problem. Check if you have all the fonts of the document. And most likely it will happen when you move the type for which you do not have the font.

Sounds like the map you gave me awhile back. :P

"There is much beauty that we fail to see through our own eyes teeming with life forms that give us that perception of our reality.  Leaves on the trees blowing gently in the wind, or scarily, the waves pounding through high surf, or lightly on a warm summer’s day; that opportunity to sit or swim in the water on a white beach.   That comfort to shout, “The universal conscious do you hear me?  I am alive, guide me dear logos towards the path of rightnesses.”  Earned what has been kept, no longer to be absorbed into a life filled with cold damn winds and  that stubborn fog clouding  my vision with nothing but darkness."

Anu,

I don't think it's a font problem, as it happens with a file that I have all the fonts for.

James,

Yes, that's the one. Did it happen to you too?

Could it be a wonky font file?

At best the file was very slow & painful

You're using your Mac? What font manager are you using? I was using Extensis for a while and didn't enjoy its abilities. I'm using Linotype FontExplorer X now and I think it works much better.

I've been using my pc for this, but the way it's been behaving lately, I think I may just prematurely switch to Mac for production work. I'll see if I can fit a KVM switch somewhere in the mess that is my desk, or get that Mac Pro that I've been promising myself for Q1 2009...

Just to fuel a good ol' Mac/PC war I'll add—no don't do it...

...but actually yes Hans go for it. I wouldn't personally but that's in no way a comment against Apple itself.
