I'm trying to find a shaded relief layer for the US that looks like the attached. I would like to us it as a base layer for a map that is 5' x 6' so the resolution needs to be very good. If not the actual data, image, then a good explanation of how it was made.

That's Tom Patterson's Natural Earth draped over CleanTopo2. More information, as well as the datasets with global coverage, can be found on his website: http://www.shadedrelief.com/
