The other day in an old shop I found a globe made entirely out of rocks & minerals. Each country was represented by a different type of mineral.

I was inspired!

I am considering trying to make a globe out of wood, completely by hand.

I have a nice big square chunk of hardwood in my yard that I would love to do something with, so I was thinking of lathing it down to a round shape, and hand cutting and wrapping different types of veneer around the wooden 'geoid' to represent the continents and waterbodies.

I know nearly nothing about wood working, but am up for a challenge!

There are some high end hand carved wooden globes out there, but I think it would be a blast to try it on my own.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Ohhh—look forward to seeing this. Would be cool to see one with the relief carved into it as well but that's getting ambitious though not so much if you were to go with laser cutting but guess that's cheating a bit.

I have thought of doing the same thing but never happened. Have a reasonable workshop from being a set builder in a previous incarnation—no lathe but have access to one.

One idea would be to print the maps out and glue em to the veneer while working the wook then sand the paper back. Also you may look into diy vacuum pumps to get enough pressure to bend and bond the areas around the globe.

Then whittle out a wooden statue of the Superintendant & put it out close to the parking lot.
