Hi.

I am looking for administrative historical shapefiles containing the borders for the countries of the world from year to year.

I've got some here

Disclaimer: I did not make this file, I can't remember who did or where I found them though. As far as I can remember, the original author did release them into the public domain and of course all credit should go to him/her.

Hi. Thanks for the files. They are quite interesting, but i did forget to mention that i was looking for shapefiles containing borders from 1946 to 2005.

Cheers!

Actually, I may be able to help you a little bit...

I have atlases/world maps from the following years in my collection:
1936, 1958, 1960, 1967, 1968, 1970, 1986, 1988 and 1999. I could make scans or photos of those maps which you could use as a reference (though they'd be in different styles, scales and projections).

In addition to that, this may be helpful if you're going to construct these files yourself:

There's also National Geographic Map Collection where you can search and see maps published since a 100 years, includind their World Maps (a lot of maps in the 50's, 60's, ...).

Could help!

You should download the old software "Viewconflicts", I think it comes with shape files that are what you are looking for. http://www.svt.ntnu..../viewConflicts/

Thanks for the link. I used those shapefiles to make this animated exhibit in google earth:

Hi,

I am replying to this old post to answer my own question.
Last year the cShapes dataset was introduced both as shapefile and as a R-package. The project is led by Nils Weidmann (Princeton Uni.) and Kristian Skrede Gleditsch (Uni. of Essex, UK).

These historical administrative boundary files tracks all boundary changes globally from 1946 ->.

Very impressive work.

The URL for the project is located here: http://nils.weidmann...rojects/cshapes

Resurrecting this thread to see if there's an interest in a proper set. I've attached that collection that I mentioned (again with the caveat that I have no idea who did it, whether or not it's public domain and am aware the quality isn't great)

Attached File  Historic.zip   3.82MB   15 downloads

What I'd really like to see is a new set, public domain, based on Natural Earth Vector 10M for at least the key times in the 20th/21st century:

  • 1900
  • 1914 (before WW1)
  • 1920 (after Versailles Treaty kicks in)
  • 1938 (after German annexation of Austria and Sudetenland)
  • 1946 (after WW2)
  • somewhere in the middle of the decolonisation period)
  • 1989 (before fall of communism)
  • 2000

Would there be an interest in this? I get on average 2-4 requests per year for that original set of shapefiles and am always happy to provide them. Would we benefit from the added accuracy we get from hooking it up to NEV? Would there be volunteers to help me out?
