Hi,
I am currently involved in a project to map Paris at approx. 1:20,000 scale so that streets, parks, water, landmarks, public transport stations are represented with appropriate annotation attached. Can anyone give me any leads on a good company or which government agency I should go through to acquire this data? Alternatively, if there is a private company that supplies straight graphic illustrator files of Paris this would work too. Thank you!

The Institut Géographique National would be a good place to start, but I'd recommend brushing up on your French as they have little information available in English.

Other than that, some of the commercial map vendors offer digital map files of downtown Paris. Check Maps.com (but that's a .gif image for web viewing)

Have a look at openstreetmap.org. Daily shapefile extract of some european countries (also France) you can find at http://download.geof....de/osm/europe/. Paris is well maped and should meet the scale 1:20 000 but I'm not sure if the're atributted as you wish them to be. Most importent - the data are free.

It's indeed very well mapped, as long as you stay within the Peripherique... Cross that and it drops in coverage and quality.

Yes I'm on my second attempt at contacting IGN. This time I even put "Bonjour" to start my letter but I don't think thats enough French for them. Know any good Learning French podcasts? I'm also hoping that they will have some data for the immediate suburbs (banlieues) outside the Peripherique. Hans, do you have a specific contact from IGN that you could shoot my way? Perhaps phoning them will work better...

As for the Maps.com, gif won't cut it as I need to do a lot of cusomization but I did check theirs out.

I'm going to look into openstreet a bit more but I have to be at least 99% sure of the accuracy of these maps and I need coverage outside the Peripherique. Also, is openstreets data customizable? I'm checking that out now though.

Well, once you have OSM data loaded into a GIS application of your choice (Global Mapper supports it and I've just received word it's been added to the latest FME beta), you can add features to it. Also, whether or not you can use it for commercial purposes is a bit of an unclear area at the moment.

Anyway, I think you must be patient to get a reply. It's a government agency, it's August, so a lot of people are on vacations so it may explain why you didn't get a reply.
The other options is to go directly to "telechargement" (download) and order what you need - https://boutiquepro.ign.fr/ Again the name of the different layers of information you can purchase doesn't make a lot of sense...

I found they have a IGN international website www.ignfi.fr. It might be your best luck

No, this is very helpful, thank you. I looked at the Pack Paris Vecteur from Intercarto and it looks very close to what I need. Ideally I would get the banlieues as well. Intercarto looks to be relatively cheap, 600 euros for all of Paris. I'm assuming that the IGN would be more expensive but possibly more comprehensive in terms of coverage. We'll see...Merci beaucoup!
