Hello All!

I've been a member of cartotalk for a few months now! I never introduced myself, although I have already taken advantage of cartotalk's advice and resources. I'm a senior at Ohio University, where I fell in love with cartography. Coming from an art background, I changed my major to geography and discovered that cartography is a great way to blend my geography, history and art interests.
My focus is on mountaintop removal in Appalachia, and I hope to be entering in the NACIS student poster competition this fall!

Hi Karla, and welcome to Cartotalk!

Looking forward to seeing your poster. Can we get a sneak peek or would that violate the rules of the competition?

Hi Karla,

Welcome to CartoTalk.

I am interested in looking at your map of mountaintop removal (the sacrilege!). I have heard of such atrocities - but have never seen any.

Missoula (NACIS '08) is a nice place with it's mountaintops remaining. See you there!

Karla.

Nice to hear from you. I hope your summer is going well. I hope that I will get a chance to come to NACIS this fall and see a finely tuned version of that beautiful map. We are in Thermopolis, Wyoming and will be heading to Cody tomorrow and Yellowstone the following day.

cheers

Hi Karla, and Welcome to Cartotalk!

Ah, I love the beautiful part of Ohio where you are. I'm from the Canton area and did some school at Kent State (I kinda wish i would've went to Athens instead  )

Thats cool stuff you doing with the mountain-top removal. You probably have already, but you should check in with a guy named Larry Gibson...I went down to stay on his land one time and it was eye-openingly sad. Here is a youtube video of him.

Also, for some intersting info you could get in touch with a phd student at Kent State named Aaron Massey...Yep his surname is Massey, the same Massey family that is doing a lot of the mountain-top removal! He has loads of info on mountain-top removal, some of it first hand kuz he grew up with it.

Anyways, I Can't wait to see you poster out here in missoula this fall!
