I'd like to start this thread as a place to collect maps that you see out in the world that aren't really maps per se. Or things that are maps... I know, I'm not making much sense...

A map on the wall of a pub in Chepstow, Wales. It claims to be the 'first and last pub in Wales'. Quite true, as I was standing on the bridge across the River Wye, which is the border between England and Wales.

Yes, sort of. A map that isn't to be used as a map per-se, but is still a map. I think the samples would make it a bit more clear.

Yah, I have already looked at the photos, just trying to put a technical name to the category of art they represent..... "map art"? "map-style art"? "map-style illustrations"? probably not "map graphics" as that implies a graphic with some validity to it.........I don't know, it's just an interesting question...................

On a closely related note, you might want to take a look at the Cartifact Gallery of Jan Smits. I don't think it has been updated lately, but there are hundreds of items. He describes it thus:

The gallery will be more about maps which are produced on a vehicle or object (carrier) which is not directly associated with cartography or which prime function is not a cartographical one, or because of their extraordinary execution.

His collection includes all sorts of things, including t-shirts, sugar bowls, pens, and even a tax bill.

I think Dennis Fitzsimons coined the phrase "Cart Deco." He had quite a collection at Southwest Texas.

Really, I would just call this "graphic design" ...or perhaps something like "Geocentric Design"

Erin -- when I first saw that bird t-shirt print, I thought it was made to look like an ArcEdit session (from ArcInfo workstation), with the little boxes/icons being dangling nodes...

To echo Erin's comments, I have seen a similar map, IIRC from the Reagan/Thatcher era (so still Cold War), but never managed to track down a copy.

Anybody here know of one?

Maze on Google Maps

Found this one on Google Sightseeing

Sever’s Corn Maze in Shakopee (outside of Minneapolis) is an annual maze which is apparently the largest in the united states. The Google Maps photo was taken sometime in 2002-2003 when the maze depicted an upside-down map of the world, perhaps because opposite magnetic poles attract? Maze homepage
