I've got an Illustrator CS3 file, originally createdi n Freehand on a Mac, converted over to CS3 using a Mac. It won't open in CS3 on a PC. We've converted a number of files using this method without any issues until this one. When I try to open the file on a PC I can see the file in the preview box but then when I click OK to open, I get a message that says
'Can't open the illustration." And then (I'm not sure if this related but I'm thinking it is because it is always popping up only when I try ot open the file) I get an error message when I exist from CS3 that reads

"The instruction at "0x00361940" referenced memory at "0x00000000." The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to temrinate the program'

Any suggestions what might be the cause? We really need to open the file on a PC (since there are 8 PCs in the office and 1 Mac).

Is there anything significantly different in the contents of this one file?

are you sure it isn't broken? Try placing it in Illy too.

Same file - nothing different. Just trying to open it on a different platform.

I haven't tried placing it, though I suspect that the same thing will happen. In any case, if I place it will I be able to retain my layers?

no about the layers, I think.

You can, of course, try different versions of Illy when you save, and also other formats (pdf and eps).

Tried saving it back to CS2 - same result. I think I'll have to open it on the Mac, delete some layers, then save. My guess is that there is some corrupted object in the file. A tedious process to try to isolate it but I don't know what else to do.

It seems to be that the problem was a type path off the artboard. It was deleted and now the file opens without any difficulties on both PC and Mac. Thanks to all for your assistance.
