I remember seeing a presentation on the same subject during last year's NACIS conference. Quite interesting if you start looking at the patterns closely.

On a similar, but more limited note, see Hi-Def San Fransisco for a display of ship traffic in the San Fransisco area.

Actually, the time-lapse photography/movie is pretty amusing to watch as well. Container ships looking like high speed motorboats.
