One trick I've used, which may be obvious to all of you, is to give the type an unusual color, which is an attribute Illustrator can search for.  Once you have the type on the right layer, with the proper style, you can always change the color and discard the one used for sorting.

I don't think it's been brought up in this thread before, but if you have MAPublisher, you can put your text layer in the map view and then use MAPublisher to select on font size and family.
