As this topic has come up again and our board has grown significantly I am going to revisit the issue of topic sorting. The sort order of postings can only be set at the forum level, not per user. So we have to decide as a community which we prefer. This will be a democratic process with simple majority winning. I will leave the poll up for 2 weeks (until March 14th).

Sure. We had this debate before and it really comes down to personal preference. Since it can't be a personal choice with this software, I am going to go with the majority.

So, the main raison I find to prefer "last post first" (present topic sorting) is that the inverse order is good when you want to read an entire topic (like I did when I joinded Cartotalk). If you're already following a topic and just want to read the newest posts on this topic (that's what I do now), I prefer to have the last post first so I don't have to scroll down or have to go to the last page to see what appears already right now right at the top of the page...

I prefer having the newest posts appear at the bottom of the thread. If I was on CartoTalk constantly I could see why the present organization would work better, but sometimes a few days will pass before I revisit the forum. During that time new threads are always started and commented upon. Reading them from the "bottom up" has always seemed really counter intuitive to me. It feels like I'm reading upside down.

I vote for change!

What I REALLY would love would be to subscribe to CartoTalk or particular topics as RSS feeds so I can view them in Google Reader.

There is an RSS feed link at the bottom of the page. You can't subscribe to individual topics, but you can for the board as a whole.

I agree with the others here that newest-at-top works well if you visit regularly, but if you miss a couple of days, or there is a particularly fast-moving thread, then its a lot of scrolling up and down. And not just to get to the first post, but between posts as well:

One option that another forum I frequent has (they go oldest first which is what I voted for BTW) is an icon that jumps to the latest post which I use all the time. Just what works somewhere else I don't want to make more work for anyone.
